Review of Circle (2015) by Erik D — 26 May 2016
Circle is really the only name for this mystery thriller. Not just because it's literally almost entirely shot with people standing in a circle, but the circle of logic displayed by the victims of this film kept leading us to the same conclusions time and time again. The thrill of the film was the question of who would survive? The mystery was obviously not just who would it be, but how would the group decide?
Circle is a very simple but morally challenging film. I'm not too keen on being killed, but would I sacrifice myself to save someone I deem to be more worthy than I of living? I have no idea. The characters of this film were faced with that very choice.
Each of the fifty hostages were kidnapped under mysterious circumstances and it's up to us to determine who to believe about how they came to be there and who among them is "good" or "bad." The story was told well and contained enough surprises and twists to keep us entertained, and by the end of the film you will have a character that you want to survive. Does that make you the real villain of the film?
Circle is a story that demands your complete attention. Missing a minute may prove costly to both yourself and the characters. The aliens are ruthless, but what are they attempting to achieve? I purposely waited until the end to point out the fact that this entire story is controlled by aliens as I didn't want to scare off those of you that aren't all that into science fiction. Before you tune me out, keep in mind everything that I have said. This is not a film about aliens, but the choices that we (people) make when faced with an impossible scenario. Live or die. What will you decide? For now, there's only one choice that you really need to make. When are you going to watch this? I think you should do so as soon as possible.
