Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Bobby D — 17 Aug 2011
I think "Cinema Paradiso" is one of the most underrated Italian movies I've seen. Salvatore (Perrin) has just been informed that his mentor Alfredo (Noiret) has just died. Over the coarse of the night, Salvatore is swept into past memories back to the time he was just a small boy, nicknamed Toto (Cascio).
As a child, he develops a love for films while going to local movie theatre, Cinema Paradiso. He sneaks up to the projectionist room several times, where film worker Alfredo aids him through life. Now coming back to his hometown for Alfredo's funeral 30 years later, Salvatore realizes that Alfredo has given him the best advice of his life.
"Cinema Paradiso" was ranked #27 out of 100 Best Foreign Films by Empire Magazine. Because a friend of mine said this movie was the best Italian movie they've seen, I knew that with their opinion and "Empire's", it would probably be a good idea.
With films, you can hope to like it, and this one exceeded by expectations. I watched this on play instantly, which is the cut that was in theaters, and the one that won an award at Cannes Film Festival.
Though short, I don't feel like I need to see the director's cut. "Cinema Paradiso" is an inspiring, heart-wrenching movie that is a must. The plot, though simple, is one of the most genius and endearing I've seen.
The characters are developed very well, and because the plotline calls for flashbacks, it not only makes you understand the characters more, but it gives you a genuine liking to them. Salvatore is a wonderful character, and every actor (yes, even the nine year old that does excellently) gives different aspects that make him more realistic, and Alfredo is simply one of the most inspiring characters on film.
The score, the cinematography, and everything else is just perfect. "Cinema Paradiso" is a must. Recommended.
