Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Ben B — 07 Jul 2014
Seems like I cannot help but love movies about loving movies. Cinema Paradiso is simply beautiful. Like an older version of the more recent Hugo, this film shows you that movies show you dreams and can inspire you to make your own.
Young Toto gets inspired by his at first reluctant mentor Alfredo (Philippe Noiret) and becomes involved with working at the Cinema Paradiso. Alfredo sees that Toto can move onto big things with film.
Toto battles his own interests with a love for a girl. Alfredo urges Toto to go pursue his dreams which takes him away from his hometown. This film ends with Toto making peace with the decisions of his past and it gives closure to his special relationship with Alfredo.
Noiret is superb as Alfredo, who serves as the film's emotional core. Movie lovers, I invite you to fall in love with Cinema Paradiso.
