Review of Cinderella (2015) by Geo G — 31 Aug 2017
A major directorial tone issue in this movie. Everything is to light, bright, whimsical and magnificent. Even for Disney. There is barely any of the humility in the presentation of a story that represents humility.
The "be kind/brave" narrative is kind of sweet at the beginning but once it gets to the second or third time it's simply annoying. The writing of this adaption was god awful. The one part that made me cringe was when she was horseback riding in the woods and they told you he was the prince, while it would have been a much stronger choice to let the audience figure that out.
I never see the tone admit that she is in a dark and depressing place. The annoying optimism overshadows it instead of creating a more interesting narrative. This movie was completely misdirected. In addition, the classic Disney "Cinderella" is wonderfully done, except those mice, but even that being said, the music of the original is so wonderful with tracks like "so this is love" it takes the gold as far as Disney movies go.
Unfortunately the soothing magic of the music is almost completely taken away. Kenneth Branagh is a very talented man in his way, but his directorial style I am not a fan of. Especially when it comes to a story that is not as quaint and harmonious as Cinderella.
His style leaves no substance.
