Review of Cinderella (2013) by Amanda W — 30 Aug 2017
Sweet, if superfluous. It closely follows the traditional Disney film, and it's hard to imagine diehard fans being displeased by it. Solid performances by all, and I was amused to see Ella Enchanted's Hattie reprising her evil stepsister role 10 years later.
On the other hand, that trivia nugget sums up the problem with the movie as a whole - there isn't really anything new here. There are a couple subtle details thrown in that add a shade more depth than the Disney classic, but nothing that really stands out.
There's just a noticeable dearth of originality in this film - and movies need that creative spark, that source of passion, to truly resonate. I did enjoy the movie though, and it has a lovely message about battling adversity while maintaining your integrity.
"Have courage, and be kind" - words I can get behind.
