Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Chris W — 22 Feb 2008
This movie took me on quite the ride. Basically, I had really mixed feeling about this film due to the 2-story format. I really could not stand story number one. Everything from the awful slo-mo, blurry secnes to the poor sounding narration felt like it was an 80s made-for-tv film. I nearly turned the movie off.
Fortunately, I stuck with it long enough for story number two to take off. I absolutely loved that part of the film. Easily a 10/10. Tony Leung and Faye Wong absolutely blew my socks off. Their chemistry was outstanding. Additionally, the film suddenly feels like a WKW film with its use of outstanding color, great framing, and untraditional effects (fast-moving background with slo-mo focal points!) It's unfortunate that the first half of this movie even exists. Otherwise I'd be talking about one of my new favorites.
EDIT: Re-watched the first half. Not that bad.
