Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Wong I — 19 Jan 2009
An instant favorite, this unpredictable winner is one of the most charming things I've ever seen. It's gorgeous to look at and is odd, funny and sweet in a genuine way. What's really striking is that even though it's basically two short films connected merely by theme and location, it doesn't feel haphazard or episodic or incomplete.
It just feels right. Natural. As if it were guided by nothing more than artistic inspiration, as directed by unabashed romanticism. While the first half is certainly brilliant, it's second segment that will win you over for life.
I don't want to spoil a thing but suffice it to say it's a beautiful, unexpected way to draw a connection between two very lonely, very likable eccentrics. I can't remember the last time a movie produced a smile this enduring.
