Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Alan K — 03 Mar 2009
"Where do you want to go? Wherever you want to take me." These final words sum up the excitement, passion and exhilarating nature of this film. Jump aboard the express and take a ride to a new frontier in cinema.
With a nod to Godard, this is the movie that introduced Wong Kar-wai to the world. (The second chapter is the most effective.) It's no wonder that this film helped launch the Chinese New Wave. It's melancholy, romantic, hopeful and funny all at the same time.
This was a thrilling time for Asian cinema where the possibilities seemed limitless.
