Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Christine P — 11 Mar 2010
"Chungking Express" was the first one of Wong's films that I've seen that takes place in present day. It definitely has a faster pace, a more concrete storyline, and a more 90's rock-and-roll feel to it than the others I'd seen.
SPOILER WARNINGS.
Wong Kar Wai tells two stories of love and loneliness in Hong Kong during the mid-1990's, both about cops getting over heartache. The first story stars Brigitte Lin as a saucy dominant female who runs her own drug smuggling business. She meets a young and boyish cop, played by Takehiro Kaneshiro, who is convinced he loves her after only spotting her in a bar.
The second story stars Tony Leung as a cop who's been around the block a few times, seduced an air stewardess, and now is missing her after they break up. He meets a young woman, played by music superstar Faye Wong, who takes a mysterious liking to him and sneaks into his bachelor pad every day to redecorate.
The entire film centers around a food counter on a street corner where the policemen visit daily for their coffee and meals.
This film was funny, lighthearted, and probably will be watchable for a wider, regular folk, film audience. Recommended. Not for kids - sexual innuendo here and there a bit.
