Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Puh N — 02 Aug 2010
Made in 1994 during the post-production of Ashes of Time, Chungking Express explores the world of identity, the search for love and the link between the two.
The film was made in an extremely short time period using hand-helds and gives the feel of incredible fast-paced spontaneity and freedom. Wong's masterful use of semiotics allows it to unfold before us deliciously and helps the story telling with fervor and without a typical Hollywood gloss.
"The cinema substitutes for our gaze a world that accords with our desires." Based on Mourlet's words as a hypothesis, Chungking Express is a beautifully elating film for the cinephile, perfectly harmonizing breathtaking panache with an equally deep substance. Wong Kar-Wai truly establishes himself as an auteur in this spur of the moment yet seductively stylish film where Hong Kong meets French New Wave.
