Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Erin F — 15 Sep 2010

I am not the biggest fan of Hong Kong director Kar Wai Wong. I appreciate his beautiful cinematography and choice of music. He definitely creates a mood that draws you into the picture, but I find that his storytelling is not as engaging. It is sometimes a little confusing and not very focused. He tends to jump around quite a bit.

That said, the 1994 movie Chungking Express tells two pretty focused stories that drew me further into this movie than any of Kar Wai Wong's other movies. Even with better stories, it is still the moody lighting and music along with an enegetic style are what made this movie this director's most complete work. The characters are interesting and all that happens was very satisfying. If you love the artistic value of film then this is for you. Looking for intense action, then don't waste your time with this one. It is a very good film.
