Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Srikanth M — 14 Apr 2012
My first Wong Kar Wai film was a dazzling experience. Kar Wai is probably the best filmmaker when it comes to use of colour along with Pedro Almodovar whose colour palette is as vibrant and eccentric. As for the two stories, it was a more interesting experience than impressive.
There are some quirky and inventive moments (especially the dog refusing canned food moment) which demonstrate Wong Kar Wai's keen eye for everyday moments of genius. But apart from that the film lacked a certain emotional core or warmth one could identify with.
These are two cops who are out of love but their pain never gets reflected (The Tony Leung part is marginally better). Nevertheless a good watch.
