Review of C.H.U.D. (1984) by Brandon S — 31 Oct 2009
In the 70s and 80s New York had a reputation as the most violent and dangerous city in the Western world, and a whole slew of independent movies built their premises around the fetid stink of the Big Apple.
"C.H.U.D." (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers) is definitely one of the best of the cycle, encompassing as it does the full monty of NY life, from the mayor's office right down to the bums who sleep in the sewers and who are getting picked off by toothy critters with glowing eyes.
John Heard, a cynical fashion photographer, is drawn into the missing person mystery after one of his subjects is almost attacked, while simultaneously a bereft cop teams up with a soup-kitchen ex-con (Danilel Stern) in the hope of finding his own disappeared wife amongst the destitutes of the city.
Pacy, funny and actually pretty scary in places, this is a low-budget treat with a bonus early performance from John Goodman and some equally grotesque monsters. Well worth tracking down.
