Review of C.H.U.D. (1984) by Tyler P — 18 Nov 2012
CHUD or CRUD. This movie is more like Crud than CHUD said a Scarsdale, New York film-reviewer.
I just got back from seeing it tonight at the CORNELL CINEMAS hosted segment of the ITHACA INTERNATIONAL FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL . . .
CHUD (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers - Contamination-Hazard Urban Disposal) is just as bad as it was 28 years ago. Well, the plot and screenplay are VERY GOOD but the execution thereof is HORRIBLE . . . Dennis Cheek should never direct again--he totally wrecked the potential of the screenplay.
A small-time Manhattan Precinct Police Captian's wife (along with several other people) disappears and the New York brass won't let him investigate the disappearances. To get help, Captain Bosch must join forces with a former drug-addict thief he used to repeatedly bust years before.
The heart of the picture is pure in the sense that homeless people literally living underground are being exploited by a toxic waste disposing company. So its a relevant, socially-conscious horror movie at its core.
BUT the filmmakers totally BLOW IT! CHUD is crud/trash/ a HUGE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY . . . maybe it can be remade someday because there is GREATNESS imbedded in the screenplay.
A fashion-photographer turned photo-journalist is notified of homeless people getting bitten.
