Review of Chronicle (2012) by David R — 24 Feb 2013
Low-budget "found footage" films often do not interest me, but Chronicle had received such good reviews that I thought I should watch it. I am glad I did, as Chronicle is one of the more interesting sci-fi films to be released in recent memory, as well as a fresh take on the superhero genre and the tired teenage tropes and themes.
Director Trank uses an interesting technique - primarily using footage filmed by the characters within the context of the movie - to craft a compelling story as these three teens discover what they can do after an event that changes their lives.
The film, though it is certainly science fiction, manages to feel "true to life", as if this is how three teenage boys would actually react if they discovered that they had some kind of superpowers, and there is a surprising amount of sympathy for the characters despite their actions.
Along with predecessors like Unbreakable, this is a unique take on the superhero genre, and one of the most intriguing sci-fi films of recent years.
