Review of Chronicle (2012) by Ruairí C — 25 Apr 2014
Kudos for trying to bring in an epic superhero movie on an indie budget. The dodgy effects are forgivable in light of such an admirable effort, but that's as far as the good will extends: The rest is inexcusably awful.
The found footage gimick is outdated already but, when applied as it is here, it's not only stretched to breaking point but rendered completely useless. In the end it's just a distracting irritant.
Add to that the usual cookie-cutter high school character types and problems, handled slugglishly by a director more concerned with style than substance (or even subtlety) and you get another teen movie, but with a bipolar tone, self-obsessed characters and motion-sickness-inducing camera work.
Based on this evidence, Trank's Fantastic Four looks set to be forgettable.
