Review of Chronicle (2012) by Aaron O — 03 Apr 2015

Don't watch the trailer and you'll like the movie more. Back in 2012 I remember being at the theater and there was nothing playing that I wanted to see, so I went to see Chronicle because it was the only movie I knew nothing about.

I didn't even know that it was a found footage movie or that it was about superpowers. I thought it was amazing, but later when I watched the trailer I was even more amazed to see the trailer spoil everything.

The special effect scenes have an impact on you because they're so sudden and powerful and destructive. It's intimidating and scary, but only if you didn't see the trailer first. Since this movie went below the radar chances are you didn't see the trailer yet so I won't spoil anything here.

Basically, it's like the anime Akria meets one of those teen dramas with shocking themes, such as Kids. It's a very exaggerated ordinary teenage boys life so you'll either identify with them in some way or you'll find them offensive.

Everything about the movie is anti-social. But don't expect any intelligent commentary on anything. Some might say this could have been great if it wasn't watered down for a teenage audience, but teens and adults can appreciate this movie.

Behind the violence and mean-spirited nature of the film is a warning to teenagers about the importance of authority and self-discipline, and from an adult perspective it's interesting to become nostalgic in your own way and recognize the person you were and the person you are now.

The movie convinces you to see the flaws you've corrected as you grew older and more wise, but also the wild innocence you lost. And how much you're still the same. It's a very thought-provoking film, but the film never forces you to think.

If you're looking for an action movie you can shut your brain off and still enjoy it. It's a personal experience. What you get out of it depends on who you are.
