Review of Chronicle (2012) by Amy M — 29 Apr 2013
The premise of "Chronicle" -- three teenage boys develop super powers after being exposed to a fallen alien craft -- suggests lightweight comic-book fare, but this is a surprisingly dark tale.
Shot in the trendy found-footage mode of "Cloverfield" and "Project X," the film follows the trio as their new telekinetic abilities soon advance from Lego blocks to cars. But one of the three is genuinely disturbed (a dying mother and an abusive father don't help), which leads to friction between the super-friends.
Despite an effects-heavy climax, this is primarily a character study. And its take on high-school social politics rings true. Not bad at all. A vague, misleading title probably hurt the film's box-office potential.
