Review of Chronicle (2012) by Michael O — 10 Aug 2013
Dane DeHaan's *literally* powerful performance as Andrew, the bullied and intense loner, saves the film from the possibility the "magic powers" premise could have slipped into American Pie-style sexist japes and shallow merriment.
Instead, while filming everything he sees in order to maintain a barrier to the grim life around him, Andrew ends up charting his own rise to popularity in school with his new found abilities, and then a very dark turn perfectly suited to where his character came from.
Most of these types of innovative films fall down through lack of character and engagement. This one flies because of the emotional intensity and background of its very surprising main character. 8/10.
