Review of Chronicle (2012) by Jacob B — 10 Nov 2018
Yes, found-footage movies can be genuinely good. It helps this movie's case that they don't focus on just one camera and shift to the nearest cameras to move the story forward. Found-footage isn't all shaking the camera around like a madman while everyone has an f-bomb throwing contest.
The performances are great, the effects are impressive for a small budget of 12 million dollars and the story is well-told with Dane DeHaan's character being a genuine woobie. To the point that you'd be forgiven for siding with him when he becomes increasingly aggressive and reckless halfway through.
What do you mean, "spoilers"? The trailer revealed it for everyone. Amusingly, it even claimed that it occurs within the 50-minute mark. CinemaWins uploaded a video about this regarding DeHaan's character and his cousin and CW makes some really solid points.
All in all, Chronicle is an underrated film that's also eerily metaphorical for director Josh Trank's eventual downfall.
