Review of Christine (1983) by Rj M — 31 May 2009
Leave it to John Carpenter to give us the best ever adaptation to a Stephen King novel. The story of unnatural, and supernatural, love between a nerdy teenage boy, and his seemingly alive 1957 Plymoth Fury.
The cast is absolutely perfect. Keith Gordon makes the amazing transformation from uber-nerd to uber-psychopath as he falls more and more under the influence of Christine. John Stockwell plays his jock best friend, who does his best to steer his friend clear of the danger the car presents.
We're also given two of the ultimate hotties from the 80's...Alexandra Paul and Kelly Preston. Great eye candy, and two very good performances. Robert Prosky is a stand out as the local junkyard owner who lets Gordon rebuild his car in his garage.
John Carpenter knows how to create atmosphere, and this is no exception. The cinematography is outstanding. The visual effects are simple, but really drive home the power of Christine. The scenes where she regenerates herself after being destroyed still hold up to this day.
Not the scariest movie in Carpenter's arsenal, but a classic nonetheless.
