Review of Christine (1983) by Timothy S — 31 Jul 2011
Movies adapted from books always seem to get a raw deal from fans because something is always lost in translation, but Stephen King fans seem to be the biggest critics. The films based on his books are almost always, with a few exceptions, lacking. "Christine" is no exception, but that's not to say this isn't a very entertaining film. It is. However, a lot of the complexity of the novel is missing from the screenplay.
Still, John Carpenter is at the top of his game as a director, and true to his craft, this is a solid, perfectly cast thriller. It's creepy, atmospheric and beautifully shot. Keith Gordon brings Arnie Cunningham to life and makes him a three dimensional character. The music is fun, and while he skimps on the details, Carpenter delivers the goods. "Christine" is a fun ride that you can bring a date to. It's light on gore and heavy on the chills.
