Review of Chopping Mall (1986) by Wes S — 14 Jul 2013
This film gets a star before even being seen just for the sheer awesome name and cover. The Cormans put together a great team and that team delivers with this cheesy 80s horror flick that's part Gog and part Trapped. Though you'd like to assume it was also pulling from the popular film Short Circuit, Chopping Mall actually came out 2 months prior so you can't really claim that it was trying to leech off the success of Number 5.
Though the kill scenes in this film aren't that great, Chopping Mall will always be on of my fave films of this era. Clearly not for everyone, but I do think the robots and the filmmakers did a fantastic job with what they had available and from what I've seen in interviews and read in articles, the roboteers ??? were also amazing hitting their mark time and time again allowing the film to pull off scenes in single takes.
Check it out if you haven't already and prepare for a schlocky good time.
