Review of Chopping Mall (1986) by Jesse O — 23 Nov 2016
Chopping Mall is a pretty silly 80's horror movie... or for any decade, for that matter. It does have several things going for it though. The yummy Barbara Crampton for one, Dick Miller for another and a really horrible 80's cheese synthesizer score.
Other than the head-exploding scene, there isn't really that much horror on display. The killbots themselves are pretty neat and remind you a little bit of Johnny Five from Short Circuit, at least in some of the look to them.
The film is also a Corman production, from both him and his wife in the producing chairs, and is directed by Corman-almunis Jim Wynorski, who directed Deathstalker II, Big Bad Mama II, Not of This Earth and Munchie.
It's a fun little movie though, but it's a shame that it hasn't gotten any real recognition on home video yet. Someday when the film isn't tied up in red tape, we'll get a proper remastered version of it.
.. either from the Roger Corman Presents label or, even better, the Scream Factory label. Until then, I'll just keep enjoying the DVD version of it that IS available, even though it's from a VHS transfer.
It may not be much of a horror movie, but it will keep you smiling.
