Review of Chopper (2000) by Hunter D — 04 Jun 2009
Andrew Dominik seems to have a fetish for legendary criminals, having done a film on Mark "Chopper" Read and Jesse James, however his fetish serves him well since both CHOPPER and THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD are both perfect films, even though the two couldn't be more different from each other.
Where as JESSE JAMES is a slow, meditative film, CHOPPER is relentlessly entertaining with a brisk pace and a wicked sense of humor. Eric Bana's comedy roots serve him well in the title role, even if the humor in the movie makes you feel more than a bit dirty for laughing at it.
Read isn't your run-of-the-mill psychopath, his behavior as interpreted by Bana is truly fascinating. I can't wait to see it again.
