Review of Chopper (2000) by Sam S — 10 Sep 2009
Something in the character of Chopper, well written by Andrew Dominik and well captured by Eric Bana (in a performance evocative of Christian Bale), is intriguing in its odd combination of violent actions and an almost child-like sensitiveness to violence.
Some stylistic flourishes presage Dominik's great achievement in THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, but original viewers of CHOPPER may be forgiven for having failed to anticipate such a superior film as ROBERT FORD; although, to be fair, for all FORD'S superiority in style, none of its characters, not even Casey Affleck's marvelous Ford, are quite equal to Bana's strange and scary Chopper.
