Review of Chopper (2000) by Lukasz S — 23 Mar 2010
Not a fan of Australia, former British prison camp and devoid of anything approaching culture or artistic ability, but occasionally they get us with those cute little accents. Paul Hogan was a national treasure for two or so years, the Crocodile Hunter before his untimely demise was probably the most famous individual from that country here in America.
Australia is a cartoon but not a nicely drawn or particularly interesting one. CHOPPER shows one of their attempts at a badass gangster, Mark Chopper Reid in our American Prisons (finest in the world? Certainly the biggest population, take that Russia) would silly slapped into submission.
The movie itself is an interesting look at the championing of a career criminal who is equally violent and charming at the same time. Bana inhabits the role quite well, he's actually got some talent! You would never know this watching his American films, seriously a boring actor.
But here he's charismatic and owns the fucking screen at every instance. Nothing particularly original but thanks to Bana is well worth a view.
