Review of Chop Shop (2008) by Matthew L — 12 Jul 2008
Engrossing neo-realist slice of life about a tough young, Hispanic orphan living on his own in New York City, trying to make a living for himself and his 16 year old sister in the slum outskirts of Queens.
Doesn't tell a story so much as paint a clear eyed portrait of a hardscrabble life, "Chop Shop" is a raw, realistic film reminiscent of Charles Burnett's "Killer of Sheep.".
