Review of Chop Shop (2008) by Juan R — 06 Jan 2009
Watchable neo-neorealist pic about a young Latino trying to scrape up a living in New York's Iron Triangle of auto repair shops; we've seen it before: kid out on his own forced to grow up fast, petty crime to make cash, but nothing goes according to plan.
Hey, ain't life hard; nothing new nor groundbreaking, but Bahrani's camera is swift and pretty to look at. Another slice-of-life that begins and ends at arbitrary points, and shows us a lifestyle different from our own; okay, I can live with that.
