Review of Chop Shop (2008) by Steve W — 27 Aug 2016
Filmed with a haunting cinema verite feel, Chop Shop is about a hustling orphan who is striving to get a better life for himself and his sixteen year old sister. He does everything from steal car parts, sell chocolate bars on the subway, and work for a chop shop.
The movie has a gritty and realistic feel, but also falls into cliches, such as the sister hooking on the side and the kid stealing without consequences. The movie feels like a documentary rather than a film, so its lacking in cinematic feel and I dock it points for that.
