Review of Choke (2008) by Joel J — 24 Nov 2009
Again, I have to say that this film is tremendously under scored. Living up to Chuck Palahniuk's novel? First of all, I can count on my hands the pictures that are capable of that - not every film can tranfer like Fight Club does.
Second, why does that matter? This is a movie, for the love of God - not a rehashing of a brilliant author's work. Every film has to follow some sort of blue print. Sam Rockwell is absolutely radiant in this one.
Don't be surprised to see this guy win some awards down the road - he has been solid since day one. The sex driven irony throughout this whole work is just absolutley hilarious. Call me sick, but I think everyone struggles with the the intimacy vs.
carnal pleasure dragon - especially if you have the upbringing that Rockwell's character deals with on a daily basis. The twist with the nurse/patient is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on film.
Anjelica Huston plays the psycho/deranged mother to a tee, and the supporting cast is just as believable. I enjoyed the hell out of this film, and I think it is about as well done as it could be. It may not be Chuck Palahniuk's novel, but who would expect it to be? Watch it.
