Review of Choke (2008) by Beth D — 30 May 2009
Somehow during my viewing of this film, I forgot I was watching a Chuck Palahniuk book-adaptation, and as a result, was not expecting the ridiculous plot twist at the end which was nice, because it surprised me much more than the ending of fight club.
Sam Rockwell is great in this film, and his character's development from misanthropic asshole to less-misanthropic asshole was actually fairly interesting. Anjelica Huston played a pretty complicated mother to Sam's character, and definitely served her role to keep the film together at times.
The supporting cast was great, most notably the best friend played by Brad Henke (Tony Tucci from Dexter for those that enjoy that show as much as I). I will probably remember this film best for some of its crude dialogue, especially at the beginning when I found myself pausing a Sex Addicts Annonymous meeting scene as my dad walked by my room, as well as my general surprise with how entertaining this movie was after my relative distaste for Fight Club.
