Review of Choke (1971) by Danielle L — 09 Aug 2009
I don't understand the hype behind Palahniuk. Sure, Fight Club is great, the book and the movie, but his other works seem to venture off into purely strange and vulgar territory. Choke is no exception, although its not his most extreme work (Read his short story 'Guts') it does offer quite a graphic look on sexuality.
After reading the book and learning of a film in the works, I was hoping that the filmmakers involved in adapting the novel were going to fix many of the mistakes and problems with the book. Unfortunately to my surprise, I think the book was better than the movie.
It's mostly the same, there have been some changes made in the story to tone down the level of sex and overall adult theme. The acting for the most part is decent, but its nothing to really gush over.
Much like the book, the plot is all over the place, and a lot of threads in the story go absolutely nowhere and are left untied. I hear the next Palahniuk adaptation is 'Survivor', which I found to be more interesting than 'Choke'.
Here's hoping it turns out alright.
