Review of Chocolat (2000) by Marci — 07 Jun 2009
One of Johnny Depp's best performances, though he may not be a main character. The story of a small town in mid-century France, where a woman of exuberance and individuality makes undoubtedly the most delicious chocolates contradicts the rigid and quiet life of the town.
Though she may be secretly gossiped and put down by her uppers, she continues without regret with her family secret in mind. Depp, playing Roux, a river rat, being despised by the entire town because of his position in society, falls in love with the chocolatier and the town's moral and tidy appearance falls into jeopardy.
But true love often prevails.
