Review of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) by Craig C — 16 Nov 2014
History has not been kind to 1968's "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," which I saw as a toddler at the Briton Cinema. The songs stuck, and I got the Hot Wheels miniature, but the Child Collector who put Jeremy and Jemima in a cage frightened me.
Underdeveloped and overproduced, Dick Van Dyke masterful performance as Inventor Potts helps the audience buy the cliches and plot holes. Based on the Ian Fleming novel, James Bond producer Cubby Broccoli hoped to expand his empire at the height of Bond Mania.
Clocking in at 2 1/2 hours plus an intermission, Broccoli could have lost an hour and half the songs and spent the savings on better SFX. Recommended for Dick Van Dyke fans only.
