Review of Chinese Zodiac (2012) by Gary M — 31 May 2014
Jackie's output over the last decade or so has been of a highly variable quality, and this film encapsulates both the good and the bad. A promising opening unfortunately heads into a painfully drawn out, unexciting and unfunny side trip to an island jungle. Maybe the broad comedy here would has played better with Chinese audiences? Maybe. It's a mess. Thankfully things then start to pick up. There's some classic Chan action in the forger's factory and an impressive free fall finale, as Jackie fights his way, hurtling down from a plane to an active volcano.
Perhaps what I've just seen is as an incomplete Western edit but this film is terribly flawed. However, IF this is to be Jackie's last action film then at least the last last two acts are fun and exciting, and a good way for the greatest ever action star to go.
