Review of Chinese Box (1997) by Kelly H — 10 Mar 2008
Eh. It seemed a bit like the director couldn't decide where he wanted to go with this movie. Was is about a dying British man on the eve of the PRC takeover? Was it a story about the people of Hong Kong and how they're lives were before and how they will be after? Was is a political commentary? Who knows because none of the themes were very clear.
I didn't feel much chemistry between Irons and Li. And honestly, I would've liked to see more of Cheung. She was the most interesting character. And whoever said "less close ups of her eyes," well, personally, her eyes tell more of a story than the entire narrative actually did.
