Review of Chinatown (1974) by Steve G — 18 Jun 2011
Artistic movies aren't necessarily good movies. This is a perfect example of that. Apparently it's supposed to be deep because it's about incest, & it's supposed to be brilliant cause it's confusing.
Not sure what the point of it all was. But it is worth seeing for the lovely dialogue, direction & performances. Seriously though, can anybody tell me what it's actually about?? As good as some aspects of it were, it seems the story gets lost somewhere along the way.
I couldn't help but leave feeling dissatisfied & robbed of a full theatrical experience. It's not so much that it was a two-star movie. It's that it had SO much potential to turn out greatly & fell so short.
The disappointment nullifies any greatness. I might've preferred Towne's original script ending where Huston bites it instead of Dunaway. As it is, Huston walking away with his daughter/grand-daughter doesn't really work.
