Review of Chimpanzee (2012) by Roy S — 26 May 2012
A nice little family film from Disney. Humans have no role and are never mentioned, which is a nice touch. None except Tim Allen that is, whose anthropomorphic narration is often annoying. The photography is astonishing, and I wish they had spent even more time filming fungus and slime molds (never thought I would write that going into this movie, or in any other for that matter).
It may be a little much for sensitive kids, and one got taken out of the theater by his mother. There is of course the killing of the mother, which is a requirement in all Disney movies; but the fact that she died as a result of an ongoing war with another band of chimps is a little disturbing.
To see the chimps hunt monkeys, rip one apart and eat it is even more so. It is carefully edited to be as bloodless and non-violent as possible, but their lives certainly don't consist of just playing in trees and eating bananas.
