Review of Child's Play 2 (1990) by Bill C — 26 Aug 2008
The problem with Horror movies?? There's always a sequel. And 9 out of 10, it's just not very good, or near as good as the original.
Child's Play 2, falls in the same league as the Nightmare sequel, where it was good, but didn't have anywhere near the entertainment value, and sheer brilliance of the first movie.
In this movie, Andy is placed in a foster home, after his mother was comitted to an institution. The manufacturers of the "Good Guy" line of dollas, resurrect there line of dolls after the negative publicity, and are ready to get rolling again. However in doing so...as the tag line said....Sorry Jack...Chucky's Back!
Chucky stalks his old owner, and his foster family, who consists of a caring mother, a not so nice father, and the typical I don't care teenager. So right away, this movie is just going through the motions.
And while everything going on does hold my interest in this film, it just lacked the outrageousness, and style that the first film had. The concept of a killer doll may have been done before, but not like it was, two years before this movie came out, when we got our first glimpse of Chucky.
While the fright scenes are good enough, and Brad Dourif's voiceover work is still amazing, the movie just seemed to be merrily rolling along like any other typical horror movie. The only reason it wasn't downright terrible was because, the scenes were all very well done.
But the scene that made me give this movie three stars, and a positive review, was the climax at the factory, which was extremely well shot, and had great visual effects.
It was clear that Chucky had it after this film, but due to the fact it almost equaled the box office gross of the first one, we knew we hadn't seen the last of the demonic doll.
