"Child's Play" is one of those horror films that proves you can take silly subject matter and turn it into something quite frightening. The movie is suspenseful, creepy, and just violent enough.

There is a fantastic build-up to when we actually believe little Andy that his new birthday present, a Good Guy doll named Chucky, is alive and angry. The effects are terrific, bringing Chucky to horrifying life, and the villain works so well because of Brad Dourif, whose voice work turns Chucky into a nasty little freak.

Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, and Alex Vincent all turn in sympathetic performances, and there are some genuine scares. Unlike the seriously campy and badly scripted sequels, the first "Child's Play" is still the best.
