Review of Children of the Corn (1984) by Richard D — 19 Jun 2016
Surprise! It's another decent Stephen King short story turned into a mediocre-to-outright-bad movie. Changes to the story account for some of the problems ... the unhappy couple looking to save their marriage become a happy couple and the downbeat ending is replaced by an inane happy one .
.. but overall, this is a dull and pedestrian film that substitutes generic action for the story's creepy atmosphere. The Lovecraftian desecrated church is just plopped on the screen banally with no fanfare, and the hidden, mysterious menace from the corn field is rendered as an ugly, chroma keyed effect shot.
By the time you hit the stupid ending where our heroic couple callously forget about the dozens of orphaned kids they've just left behind in a barn, nobody could care anymore.
