Review of Children of Men (2006) by Martin S — 08 May 2015
A strange mish mash of a film. The premise is great and will appeal to fans of sci-fi/dystopian future buffs.
There are elements of sci-fi, chase thriller, social commentary and some off kilter humour thrown in for good measure. There is a lot thrown at the wall, some sticks, some slides off into a big gloopy mess.
For me, the plot and direction tried too hard to come across as weird and kooky. I assume this was to keep the audience on it's toes and give a sense of how disorientating this new reality is. However it just came across as annoying. Rather than hark back to off kilter sci-fi like Terry Gilliam's Brazil, I'd rather they had played it straight and answered more of the questions the plot asked.
Would have liked to see more of the criminally underused Moore, who never disappoints.
Overall an enjoyable and intriguing enough film. Just a shame the Director tried to do too much rather than let the premise be the hook.
