Review of Children of Men (2006) by Eunhae Grace H — 15 May 2014
Theo posed an interesting question (paraphrased mind you), "Even without humanity's infertility we would have gone down this shitty road anyways." Even without a worldwide crisis, can't we tell by the gears nations are running in, that dystopian is our eventual end? Also will there come a day with spiritual infertility come? When religion and hoping in things unseen will come?
Enjoy the intentionality of Alfonso shots of: caged immigrants, apartment tenants suiciding, upside down feet sticking out burials; to get viewers sucked into the story.
At the start of the New World and the end of the world, white supremacy becomes an issue. Is this an exaggerated claim or something solid to consider?
Certain religious aspects I question is the harsh view of religion. The scene where believers are dressed in yellow holding up picket signs and refugees looking delusional when praying. Is Kee symbolic of Mary (meeting in a barn)? Theo's Father and Theo sacrificing themselves for new life, what are the implications of those actions? What idea/message was Kee embodying or all of the extraordinary diverse characters as well?
The ending was gruesome with a bit of planned glory. With death coming all around, there comes life. With one baby's cries, the crying/dying refugees rejoice. With one baby a war was paused; however, humanity never fails to forgot hope and goes shooting one another once again.
Is humanity subconsciously or innately good? On one hand humanity sees no purpose in living their own lives freely without a continuous of all lives; to live for someone other than self. "When my baby was kicking me, I realized it was alive. And that I was alive," Kee exclaimed. She began to live when she realized she had another life in her. WHOOOA. Do you see all the tie ins? Our life worth living to better the world for the young? If the claim is base, why was there such animosity and tragedy with infertility?
Other questions: what was the purpose of the cat climbing Theo; Theo's father saying pull my finger ..... and zzzzzz.
