Review of Children of a Lesser God (1986) by Ka Wai L — 18 Aug 2008
This movie teetered dangerously close to becoming a "message movie", that is, a movie that sacrifices plot and character in order to deliver a message, but it never went there. Matlin and Hurt's relationship was realisitic, and had problems that many people in quote unquote normal relationships do.
I cared for these people, I cared for this world, and the movie accomplished all of that. Most of the reasons I liked this movie was the charisma of the actors themselves, but that's nothing to sneeze at.
A really good movie.
