Review of Children of a Lesser God (1986) by Kelly B — 31 Aug 2008
In my personal opinion, William Hurt is one of the best actors of our generation. The man's a God gifted natural. He had just won best actor the previous year for, "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and was nominated again for "Children" yet lost to Paul Newman for "The Color of Money".
Now, this puts me in a very awkward situation, with Newman being my favorite Actor. However, even though Newman was great in his reprisal from " The Hustler", this was a pity Oscar. Newman should have won for "The Verdict" in '82 yet lost.
So, even though Newman's my favorite, the better performance was Hurt. Also, "Children" may now have an '80s feel looking back, but it's still a damn good romantic story, and clearly better than Oliver Stone's "Platoon", which beat "Children" out of the best picture Oscar of 1986.
Lesson to be learned from this review- The 1986 Ceremony had its head up it's ass!
