Review of Chico & Rita (2010) by Christian G — 29 Jan 2012
Chico & Rita is an epic love story spanning continents. Featuring beautifully rendered animation and vibrate Cuban jazz, the tale of Chico and Rita is a wild ride on the heart strings. There are heart warming scenes and heart breaking scenes and it all feels very honest.
Chico is a young piano player in Cuba who meets Rita, a beautiful singer whose voice matches her beauty. This is shown throughout the film in how she is drawn and shown, in a very sexual way especially in the beginning.
It's their story and it's best to just go into it and not know anything about it. I don't know much about the technical aspects of animation but I love this style of animation, particularly for this film.
It's vibrant and almost seems to flow. I really prefer animation that is both 2D and 3D as well and its just gorgeous in this film. There are a few emotional scenes where I felt that characters emotions weren't strong in their facial region but I'm not sure if that is because of the animation itself or lack of detail.
If you want to watch a great love story with a vivacious soundtrack, watch this film.
