Review of Chico & Rita (2010) by Juan B — 18 Feb 2012
Chico and Rita has some observable limitations: simple animation techniques, voice acting and a slow pace which is more suited for a documentary-style filmmaking, can only be accompanied by simplistic storyline and characters that cannot be shown to be too multi-dimensional in order to be supported by the limitations mentioned.
Due to that, it could have been given just a 3 - 3.5star rating. However, even with that being said and with those setbacks involved, the quality is solid and maximized to its full potential, the ups and downs of their lives are heartwarming, the main characters are engaging, and best of all complemented by the wonderful classy, old-school Cuban music which is the core of the movie's main strength.
I was pretty impressed in the end to say this deserves at least a 4 star/ Would say this should be a strong contender for the win of the Animation category.
