Review of Chicken with Plums (2011) by Pooya I — 15 Sep 2012
This is a unique movie that wanders in between reality and surrealism in a delightfully dark and humorous way. The humor, while superficial and overtly simplistic, nevertheless faithfully contributes to the joyful experience of the movie. The other contribution of course being the fantasy/surrealism. The two are in fact Satrapi's characteristic tools in leaving the audience with a positive feeling after watching the movie, despite of the very dark grounds on which the plot is based. These tools are indeed fully carried over from Persepolis.
Among the critiques comments is why they spoil the story with the news of Nasser Ali's death at the beginning. I actually find this a strong and unique aspect of the plot and part of it's playful nature. Announcing the death at the end, apart from being every bit too cliche, would leave less room for humor to play its role effectively.
Overall it was very delightful to watch and I definitely recommend it.
