Review of Chicken Run (2000) by Jacob B — 24 Aug 2018
Ah, yes, Aardman's feature film debut about chickens in a POW camp and have to lay eggs or else they get killed by Mrs. Tweedy and her appropriately henpecked husband...a fun G-rated movie for the whole family.
Aardman even said that everything before Shaun the Sheep was never meant for kids to begin with so that makes things a bit confusing. The movie's good. The animation looks good, the stop-motion animators clearly worked their asses off on it, the sets are quite good with the inside of a pie-making machine being quite technically impressive and is the movie funny? You bet your ass it is.
A couple of radar-dodging jokes because you'd be surprised just how much British humour can get away with and a decent amount of puns and not just the husband being HENPECKED. The action scenes are fun and the voice acting is good.
You genuienly see these characters talking to each other with Mel Gibson sharing good chemistry with the Brit playing the main character. All the more impressive considering that Gibson was in a different recording studio than in the one used by the Britons.
Chicken Run is a fun comedy classic and a worthy feature-film debut from Aardman.
